More than 1000 years ago, Kobo-daishi, a highly revered Buddhist monk, visited this area during his travels all over Japan. Seeing the bleak scenery of this valley where sulfuric fumes and hot mud abounded, he was shocked as though he had seen hell. Since then, it has been believed that thanks to the miracle, many people have been saved from such torment. Today the statue is known as the “Jizo for longevity and child-rearing.”
